Cycling attracts tourists

WHEN the Mein Schiff 1, a cruise ship from Germany, berthed in Penang on Feb 13, its passengers had an opportunity to take a tour of Penang.
Some went on trishaw rides, some took a leisurely stroll through the city with tourist guides and another group cycled.
Buletin Mutiara’s Chan Lilian, who was at the Town Hall for an assignment, captured the scene when they cycled in groups and stopped to marvel at the beautiful City Hall and Town Hall buildings.
According to one of the local tourist guides, some tourists love to cycle to sample the sights and culture of a place.
With Penang’s network of shared pedestrian lanes which connect the city via the green lane marked for cyclists, the city is definitely a paradise to explore on bicycles.
Exco member for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Island mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail and Secretary Yew Tung Seang who were at the City Hall were very happy to see the tourists enjoying Penang.
MBPP has been actively promoting cycling and making Penang into the first cycling state in Malaysia.
Dedicated lanes were built while the city is being connected with shared pedestrian lanes in town. MBPP is also turning back lanes and sidelines in quaint, heritage George Town into cycling paths too.
