NO land belonging to the Penang Chinese Girls High School (PCGHS) will be acquired for the road widening project under the Pan Island Link
(PIL) Exco for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Chow Kon Yeow said SRS Consortium, the project delivery partner (PDP)
for the Transport Master Plan (PTMP), of which PIL is a part, has informed him the land was not needed for the road project.
“SRS Consortium has worked out the alignment which does not require the school’s land,” Chow told a media conference on March 2 at Komtar.
He added that the alignment also does not involve land owned by Phor Tay High School and Indian Association in Jalan Gottlieb.
Chow said the requirement for the school to surrender part of the land to the Penang Island City Council was not due to PTMP.
“This condition was required under the Council Draft Road Layout Plan which needed a part of the land for a development for Right of Way (ROW)
areas which may be used for future road expansions or other works.
“This scenario arose when PCGHS applied to build a nine-storey building in July 2013, and the planning permission given in December the same
year,” he added.
The permission lapsed in February 2014 as no renewal permission was submitted.
Thus, the issue of surrendering the land did not come about, Chow said.
Earlier at a press conference on March 2, Tanjong Bunga assemblymember Teh Yee Cheu had voiced his concerns over the possible acquisition of
land belonging to PCGHS.
“The alignment of the PIL can still be redesigned in many ways since nothing is finalised yet. I urge the state government to seriously consider and
take heed of the voice of the people in this matter,” The had said.
