Penang hosts vegetarian congress

FOR the first time, the Southeast Asian Vegetarian Congress (SEAVC) will be held in George Town on Nov 11 to 12.
This is the most prestigious event for vegetarians from across the Southeast Asian region.
The congress was previously held in Vientiane, Laos (2014), Chiangmai (2012), Medan (2010), Jakarta (2008), Kuala Lumpur (2006) and Batam, Indonesia(2004).
“We are expecting delegates (chefs, environmentalists, academics, nutritionists, health experts and others) from across Southeast Asian nations and other parts of the world, including India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe and USA,”
SEAVC2016 organising committee chairman Pishu Murali Hassaram told a media conference chaired by exco for Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Phee Boon Poh at Komtar on Oct 10.
The congress, organised by Malaysian Meatless Day Charity Carnival and supported by the Penang state government and Malaysian Vegetarian Society, is held in tandem with the annual Malaysian Meatless Day Carnival on Nov 13 at Upper Penang Road, George Town.
SEAVC2016, themed “Happy eating, happy living”, will feature delightful and eye opening talks and presentations on vegetarian health, fitness, good cooking and nutrition.
Among the presenters who have confirmed attendance include Dr Susianto Tseng, renowned nutritionist and president of International Vegetarian Union, who will deliver the keynote address; American medical specialist Dr Thomas Lodi who will speak on “Eating and lifestyle control our genes”, and activist Suphaporn Roopngam who will give a talk and demonstration on some Thai and Indonesian recipes.
There will also be a book launch of “At Home from Pot to Pot” by Pauline Menezes.
It features a fully illustrated guide on how to grow 16 different herbs and spices and use them to prepare 30 healthy and wholesome dishes with
exciting flavours.
Registration for SEAVC2016 is now open at RM200 per person (without accommodation).
This includes participation at the conference, two lunch meals on Nov 11& 12, grand dinner on Nov 11, delegates dinner on Nov 12, snacks and refreshments for all tea sessions during the conference, conference materials and souvenirs and certificates.
The event will raise funds for the Pertubuhan Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya and Sadhu Vaswani Welfare Fund.
