WITH quiet dedication and a genuine care for the community, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) staff member Razif Ramli has turned his daily routine into meaningful service. His effort that recently earned the Teluk Bahang food court public toilet second place in MBPP’s ‘Public Toilet Excellence Awards 2025’.

Having served with MBPP for nine years, Razif has been overseeing the public toilet for the past four months.

For him, the role goes beyond routine cleaning; it represents the very image of public service to the community.

Sharing his daily routine with the Buletin Mutiara team today, Razif said his work begins as early as 6am and ends around 6pm.

“I carry out hourly inspections and perform three rounds of thorough cleaning each day. If I notice any dirt, I do not wait. If it is left too long, it gets stuck and becomes harder to remove,” he said.

While MBPP provides basic cleaning supplies, Razif often spends his own money on air fresheners and additional tools to enhance the comfort of toilet users.

However, he admits that the biggest challenge comes from the attitude of a small number of users who neglect cleanliness.

“Sometimes we have just cleaned the area, and five minutes later, someone leaves waste behind. But this is my responsibility, so I must ensure the toilet remains clean and in good condition,” said Razif who lives in Bukit Minyak.

Razif’s dedication has earned him RM600 in cash prizes, as well as equipment such as a water jet, in addition to contributing extra marks to his annual performance assessment (SKP).

He said the recognition serves as a significant motivation to continue improving his work.

“Even though the toilet facilities here are basic, I try to improve the space with my own initiatives. I want visitors to feel comfortable. When public toilets are clean, it reflects positively on us as civil servants,” he added. For Razif, this accomplishment is just the beginning.

Wrapping up the conversation, Razif said : ‘I will use the prize money to further enhance the facilities for the convenience of all users.

“I hope this small effort can inspire my colleagues to continue improving service quality, ensuring that public facilities remain in their best condition for everyone”.
