Moving towards a ‘safe society’

THE “Heart-Safe Penang” programme was started with the purpose of training all levels of the community the technique of cardiopulmonary

resuscitation (CPR) and the correct use of automated external defibrillator (AED).

A simple technique like CPR and use of AED can potentially save a life.

“The ‘Heart-Safe Penang’ programme which received the support of the Penang state government was launched with Lions Club of

Georgetown Central, State Health Department, Penang General Hospital, Seberang Jaya Hospital, CPR Association Penang, Red Crescent

Society Malaysia and St. John Ambulans Malaysia.

“We hope all Penang residents will participate in the training of CPR and use of AED in forming a safe community,” Chief Minister

Lim Guan Eng said during the launch of AED in conjunction with“Penang Heart-Safe Programme” at Sungai Nibong Bus Station near

Bayan Lepas on Feb 29.

Joining him were exco for Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health, Dr Afif Bahardin, Penang Island mayor

Datuk Patahiyah Ismail, North-east district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and councilor, Joseph Ng.

This programme has identified 10 public places in Penang island and mainland for the location of the AED machines owned by the state.

The state government has allocated RM41,340 to install five AED machines, while ZOLL Medical Corporation has spent the same

amount to install another five machines.

“With this, we will continue to install AED machines in stages in every district in Penang,” Lim added.

He commented that in developed countries, AED machines were installed at bus and LRT stations, community centres, sports complexes

and hypermarkets.

Meanwhile, on Feb 20, Lim also officiated the launch and installation of a AED machine at the Youth Park.
