PASSIONATE about education, Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan has taken the initiative to provide free tuition classes for primary school students from low-income families in his constituency.

According to Kumaresan, the tuition programme, which is currently supported by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), has been running since his first term as a state assemblyman.

“The tuition classes are conducted at Hamna Desa Permai Indah Flats in Sungai Dua and can accommodate between 30 and 50 students. The programme focuses on core subjects, namely English, Mathematics, Malay Language, and Science.

“Free tuition classes were previously conducted at Dewan MPKK (Village Community Management Council) Taman Pekaka, but we had to discontinue them due to low response.

“Education, employment opportunities and business opportunities were my key focus when I campaigned as the Batu Uban candidate,” he added.

As part of his ongoing efforts, a Career Fair was held in Batu Uban on June 17, attracting 1,500 job seekers. The event also helped several attendees secure employment through walk-in interviews conducted during the fair.

Kumaresan also appealed to parents to remain committed and ensure their children attend the free classes regularly.

Meanwhile, in his capacity as the PKR Tanjong branch chairman, Kumaresan announced the upcoming launch of  ‘Kelas Tuisyen Bijak Madani’, a new party-led initiative, set to begin on July 19.

“Just like the initiative at Hamna Flats, we will be offering free tuition classes here for primary school students from low-income families, covering core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Malay Language, and Science.

“We prioritise core subjects to ensure students develop essential skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic,” he said.

“We are collaborating with a local tuition centre to conduct the classes. The teachers are charging a minimal fee of RM50 per student, which we will fully cover with a target enrolment of 50 students.

“If the group gets bigger, we will definitely look into expanding the classes. And if the response is encouraging, we may even extend the programme to secondary school students too,” Kumaresan said.

In addition to tuition, Kumaresan also revealed that his education programme occasionally conducts STEM workshops for secondary students, in collaboration with local schools.

“I would like to thank Dewan Persatuan Penduduk Flat Kedah and Abdul Wahab Shaik Maidin chairman for generously providing the hall free of charge for the classes,” Kumaresan added.
