ST John Ambulance Penang, in collaboration with primary schools, has successfully organised the ‘FAST Hero’ stroke awareness programme for children aged five to nine.

Developed and endorsed by the World Stroke Organisation and supported by the Angels Initiative, the programme aims to instil early stroke awareness among young children, empowering them to recognise symptoms and share this life-saving knowledge with their parents and grandparents.

A total of 166 students from SJK(C) Li Tek A, Li Tek B, and Li Tek Cawangan participated in three sessions on Aug 25, while another 96 students from SJK(C) Chung Hwa Confucian B took part in two sessions on Sept 10.

The children were introduced to the FAST message –

• F: Facial droop

• A: Weakness in the Arm

• S: Speech difficulties

• T: Time to call 999

Through fun-filled presentations, interactive videos, engaging activities, and singing sessions led by St John first aid trainers, the students learned how to identify stroke symptoms and respond appropriately. Each child received a workbook that encouraged continued learning and sharing of knowledge at home with family members.

The programme also highlights the idea that there is a hero in every home – children can play a crucial role in protecting their grandparents or parents by recognising stroke symptoms early and knowing what to do. By learning from a young age, children become potential lifesavers for their loved ones.

In his speech, St John Ambulance Penang State Commander, Datuk Seri Dr Yee Thiam Sun, emphasised that stroke is a time-sensitive emergency and often occurs when children are present.

“If children know how to react, they can save lives. By instilling awareness at a young age, we are equipping them with the ability to make a real difference,” he said.

At the conclusion of each session, Deputy State Commander Karen Lim presented certificates of participation to the schools, followed by an exchange of souvenirs as a token of appreciation.

Lim Teng Yong, headmaster of Li Tek A, expressed appreciation for the efforts of St John Ambulance volunteers.

“The session was very interesting and engaging. The children truly enjoyed it,” he commented.

Meanwhile, Loh Kar Yin, headmaster of Chung Hwa Confucian B, also shared her gratitude.

“We are pleased to have St John trainers bring this valuable knowledge to our students. I am confident that the awareness will spread from the children to their parents and grandparents.”
