PENANG has welcomed more Latin American countries to explore opportunities for collaboration with the state, be it in trade, innovation, education, or culture.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the Latin American Film Festival (LAFF) at Wawasan Open University (WOU) this evening, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the growing ties between Penang and Latin America, particularly in tourism and trade.

Chow highlighted the growing ties between Penang and Latin America, particularly in tourism and trade.

“Between January and September this year, Latin American arrivals via the Penang International Airport recorded a 40.58% increase compared to the same period last year.

“This reflects not only the success of initiatives like this festival but also the growing curiosity and connection between our peoples,” Chow said.

On the trade front, Chow said Penang’s exports to Latin America, particularly to Mexico, Brazil, and Costa Rica, continue to strengthen, underscoring Penang’s position as Malaysia’s leading exporter of electrical and electronic products.

“From January to September this year alone, Penang’s exports to Mexico amounted to over RM8 billion, reaffirming Latin America as a vital and promising market for Penang,” he added.

Chow noted that while Latin American investments in Penang remain modest, with the most recent being from Belize in 2020, the state government remains optimistic about future prospects.

“We hope this will pave the way for more Latin American countries to engage with us, whether through trade, innovation, education, or culture, as we celebrate Latin America tonight through film, music, and stories that transcend borders,” Chow said.

He further emphasised that LAFF represents more than just a cinematic showcase.

“It is a bridge that connects the Pacific coast of Latin America to the shores of Penang and the Strait of Malacca. And like any strong bridge, it goes both ways, enabling not only cultural exchange but also friendship and understanding,” he said.

Chow also reflected on the shared values between the two regions.

“Although separated by oceans, our regions share deep historical and cultural ties, from our colonial pasts to our shared commitment to independence, justice, and development. We are, in fact, more connected than we may think.

“So tonight, let us celebrate that openness through the language of film, friendship, and shared humanity.

“Thus, I hope this festival inspires not only cultural appreciation but also deeper ties between Penang and Latin America,” he concluded.

The festival was officially opened by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his consort, Yang Mulia Toh Puan Raja Datuk Seri Utama Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah.

The Latin American Film Festival 2025 runs from Oct 30 to Nov 2, featuring an exciting lineup of films from Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Colombia. Screenings will be held at Coex @ Kilang Besi, located at Hin Bus Depot, George Town.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Chile in Penang Datin Joelyn Teoh Lay Fung, Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin and Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP) chairman Datuk Ch’ng Huck Theng.
