THE rehabilitation of part of the Pulau Burung landfill site is set to become a transformative project, with plans underway to develop one of its kind green energy industrial park in the country.
Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo shared that the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to sustainable development, balancing industrial growth with environmental protection and socio-economic progress.
“The development of a green energy industrial park serves as a catalyst to attract high-quality investments while enhancing the state’s global competitiveness,” he said during a site visit to Pulau Burung landfill yesterday.

Jagdeep added that with land scarcity in Penang, transforming landfill sites into high-value land is a strategic move that not only reduces environmental harm but also creates employment opportunities and boosts the local economy.
Meanwhile, Victor Yeow, advisory chairman of AE Carbon Capital Ltd, highlighted that the project will deliver multiple benefits, including resource recovery, advancement of the circular economy, renewable energy generation, environmental protection, land restoration, as well as climate impact mitigation and carbon reduction.
