PENANG Island City Council (MBPP) has taken the initiative to upgrade the parking system at the Beach Street multi-storey council carpark by awarding via open tender the management of the parking building to a private company.

Previously, the parking was open till 7pm but now the 204-lot parking operates round the clock.
The company which was awarded the tender has undertaken the upgrading of the carpark building to include more lights and security.
“MBPP benefits by cutting down on manpower as the cleaning service and the operation of the carpark is taken over by the company,” MBPP councillor Joseph Ng told members of the media at a site visit on March 24.

Those who regularly go to the banking area and Little India enclave will know that finding a parking is a nightmare along busy Beach Street, Bishop Street and the vicinity during office hours.
Therefore, the MBPP parking complex is certainly a respite in the busy city.
Parking rate is RM1 for the first hour and RM1/hour for subsequent hours.
For the convenience of the public going to MBPP for renewal of licences or other services, the first 15 minutes is free.
