API reading in Balik Pulau reaches unhealthy level

THE Penang government is planning to roll out the necessary health awareness campaigns, as the air quality in Malaysia worsened.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Penang had been on the rise and it was time to activate the public awareness mechanism.

“We will discuss about it tomorrow and come up with the health advice and awareness for the public,” Chow told a press conference after opening the In.Tech Conference in Bangunan UAB in China Street Ghaut today.

Balik Pulau has recorded unhealthy API level since 3am today. The API reading in Balik Pulau was 102 at 3am; and the reading has since climbed to 110 at 11am.

Three other locations in Penang – Seberang Perai (79), Seberang Jaya (79) and Minden (95) – had moderate API levels at 11am today.

An API reading between 0 and 50 is good while 51 to 100 is moderate. API reading between 101 and 200 is unhealthy.

The reading from 201 to 300 is considered very unhealthy, and 301 and above is deemed hazardous.
