THE authorities will decide by this evening whether the affected Jalan Tun Sardon can be reopened to traffic, following several minor landslides along the stretch caused by continuous downpour over the past few days.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the road remains closed as safety remains the top priority for now.

“We will not reopen the road until the technical agencies confirm that it is safe for use,” he said at the sidelines of the opening ceremony of Penang Green Summit 2025 at Penang Waterfront Convention Centre.

Zairil said the slope stabilisation and mitigation works are still being carried out, but the progress has been hampered by wet weather.

“If the rain stops and conditions improve, the repair works can be completed within a day. It could have been done yesterday, but the rain disrupted the process,” he said.

Zairil added that while there was no major soil movement, several additional mitigation measures must be installed before the route can be reopened.

“For now, the status remains closed. We will review the situation again this evening,” he said.

Zairil urged motorists to use alternative routes until the slope is declared stable and safe for use by the relevant authorities.
