Cecil Street Market traders and market-goers get pleasant surprise

TRADERS and market-goers at Cecil Street Market today were caught off guard when Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow dropped by to distribute face masks to them.

Chow, accompanied by Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi and his service centre volunteers, spent about 20 minutes to distribute the face masks.

Also joining them at the face mask distribution were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillors Wong Yuee Harng and Alan Lim Wei Lun.

Chow hands over a packet of masks to one of the traders in Cecil Street Market.

Many recipients were glad and expressed their gratitude to Chow and the team for providing the much needed item during this Covid-19 pandemic.

In view of the virus outbreak, many people had earlier scrambled to purchase the masks that were hard to come by during this challenging time.

Chow said almost 500 packets of masks, comprising four pieces in each packet, were given out.

Gooi said the situation at the market was under control since the movement control order (MCO) was implemented on March 18.

“Social distancing measure is also adhered to by the people,” he said.

At the market, police personnel and volunteers from service centre were seen manning the queue and reminding the people to stay one-metre apart from each other.
