PENANG Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo has expressed his concern over the authorities’ decision to reopen schools in stages nationwide starting Oct 3.

He was unconvinced by the authorities’ plan to resume the school session as the Covid-19 daily cases and its infections rate are still high.

“As a parent myself, I am deeply concerned and worried over the authorities’ plan to reopen the schools.

“Although the Covid-19 cases have shown a downtrend recently, we must not be complacent but strive to adhere to the relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“As the plan to reopen the schools is under the Federal Government’s purview, I hope they can make sure that the students, teachers and schools’ staff are getting vaccinated.

“This is important to ensure the safety and health of our kids is prioritised,” he said during a virtual press conference on Penang’s smart initiatives.

Earlier, Jagdeep emphasised the importance of smart initiatives to drive the state further amid Covid-19 pandemic.

“In Penang, we have many smart initiatives to spur the state to greater heights.

“As the 5G services is one of the important infrastructures for us, we hope the Federal Government can assist all the states.

“Besides that, the cashless transactions are also one of the smart initiatives for us,” he added.
