Delegation from Xiamen strengthens ties with sister city Penang

DELEGATES from Xiamen, China, a sister city of Penang, paid a courtesy call on Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Datuk A. Rajendran at Komtar today.

The delegation, led by Li Weihua, a member of the Standing Committee of the Xiamen Municipality, aimed to further strengthen the ties between the two cities.

Rajendran appreciated Li Weihua and his team’s effort in visiting him and Penang, marking the 30th anniversary of their sister-city relationship established in 1993.

“We also hope to have a long lasting bond with Xiamen.

“Both the cities have benefitted from each other in many aspects, such as culturally, economically and socially,” Rajendran told the media after the meeting.

Rajendran also shared that the delegates also extended an invitation to his team to attend the ‘China International Fair for Investment and Trade’ in Xiamen on Sept 8.

“We will be sending our delegates to the fair as a gesture of reciprocating their initiative. I have actually visited Xiamen 20 years ago,” he said.

Also present at the meeting was Chinese consul-general to Penang Zhou Youbin.

Apart from that, Rajendran also said that the Penang Xiamen Friendship Association has been instrumental in forging closer ties between Penang and Xiamen.

“Xiamen is a city that has seen a rapid development which is similar to Penang,” Rajendran added.
