HUNDREDS of participants from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), state government agencies, educational institutions, and the private sector came together this morning for the World Cleanup Day – Penang Edition at the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama).

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the programme was held in conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2025.

“The main objective of this programme is to raise public awareness, cultivate a culture of cleanliness, and foster a shared sense of responsibility for environmental sustainability,” Rajendran said during his speech before launching the event.

Also present were MBPP councillors Rohaizat Hamid, Ooi Mei Mei, Shafiz Rahim Raja, Visvenathan Tangavello, Benji Ang Ming Quan, and Koay Gaik Kee.

Rajendran added that World Cleanup Day – Penang Edition also provided a platform for participants to nurture their love for the environment, educate the community on responsible waste disposal, and encourage the practice of recycling in daily life.

“The small efforts we make today whether picking up litter, separating recyclables, or reducing the use of single-use plastics will bring positive impacts to our city’s cleanliness, public health, and the well-being of future generations,” he said.

According to Rajendran, Penang recorded a recycling rate of 43.72% in 2024, surpassing the 40% target.

“Although we have achieved the target, much more still needs to be done to further increase the recycling rate on the island.

“This includes stronger collaborations with various parties, such as organising more community clean-up programmes.

“I am also glad that MBPP councillors have been actively engaging with local communities through their own clean-up initiatives,” he said.

Rajendran also urged the public to instil a love for the environment so that Penang remains clean, safe, and healthy for all to live in.
