FORMER Japanese badminton star Kento Momota made his Penang debut today, showcasing his trademark finesse at the Century Cup tournament held in conjunction with the Penang Badminton Association’s (PBA) 100th anniversary at the Bukit Dumbar hall.
The 31-year-old, clearly impressed by the packed venue, told reporters that he was delighted by the energy and enthusiasm of the fans.
“I see many young people here playing badminton. Everyone looks like they’re truly enjoying the sport,” he said.
Although retired from the professional circuit, Momota remains in excellent form, moving around the court with his familiar grace.
“I have never stopped playing badminton. I still train every day,” he added with a laugh.
When asked if he planned to become a coach, Momota said he currently prefers to focus on improving himself while inspiring younger players.
“My goal at this Century Cup is simply to give my best and fight for every win,” he said.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi, who officiated the opening ceremony, praised PBA for its meticulous preparations and described the tournament as an opportunity for the public to witness the strength and commitment of Penang’s badminton community.
He also congratulated PBA on reaching its 100-year milestone and commended its long-standing dedication to talent development, badminton promotion and nurturing discipline and sportsmanship among youth.
Gooi extended his best wishes to all players, reminding them to compete with passion and uphold true sporting values. He also thanked sponsors and partners for their support in advancing the growth of badminton in Penang.
Among those present at the tournament’s opening ceremony were PBA president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak, Greatech Technology chief executive officer Datuk Seri E.K. Tan, Penang State Sports Council director Harry Chai, and other distinguished guests.
Kah announced that the Century Cup tournament, featuring 24 teams from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, runs from today until Sunday and offers a total prize purse of RM24,000.
“The highlight of PBA’s centenary celebration will be tomorrow’s gala dinner at the SPICE Convention Centre, where more than 2,000 guests are expected. Doors will open at 4pm for the Hall of Fame Exhibition, showcasing trophies and memorabilia from legendary Penang and Malaysian shuttlers, before dinner begins at 7pm,” Kah said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is expected to grace the event, which will also be attended by former greats, including Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, 1967 Thomas Cup captain Datuk Teh Kew San, singles ace Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe, Ong Ewe Hock and many other state players.
Cheng Hoe and his two grandsons were warmly received at the Penang International Airport this afternoon by retired lecturer Khoo Tiang Oon, a member of the PBA Centennial Organising Committee, when they flew in from Kuala Lumpur.
