Lions clubs to hold blood donation drive

TWO Lions clubs are collaborating with the Penang Hospital to organise a blood donation campaign at Gurney Paragon Mall on Aug 23.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit praised the Lions Club of Penang Outreach and the Lions Club of Penang Rising Star for carrying out the joint campaign in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis.

“As we’re going through a pandemic right now, there may be fewer people coming forward to donate blood,” Lee told reporters at his service centre in Pulau Tikus.

“Blood is an important commodity. When I hear of some friends in need of blood, I will try my best to donate blood.

“When there is a short supply of blood, we might not be able to save some lives.

“So, if you have the ability to save lives, why not? If medically you are able to do so, please participate.”

Lee added that Covid-19 seems to be making a second wave worldwide and he hoped that it could be prevented from making a second wave in Penang.

“I have faith that this Covid-19 will eventually go away, but the recovery phase will be a challenge to all of us.

“While life is changed forever, let us talk about helping those who are really in need through blood donation drive.”

D308 B2 district governor Datuk Yeoh Moh Chai, who was also present, thanked both clubs for their initiative and efforts in organising such a meaningful project.

He also advised everyone to be careful, stay safe and abide by the standard operating procedures as the state and country continue to fight Covid-19

Lions Club of Penang Rising Star (LCPRS) organising chairperson Dr Sivasangari Subramaniam said their club has been running a monthly blood donation programme.

“We lend a hand to the Penang Hospital as there is a lack of blood supply,” she said.

LCPRS, which was formed on Oct 10 last year, is helmed by founder and charter president David Seow Chee Hoe, a former badminton star player.

“We’re a relatively new club with 25 members serving the community,” Seow said.

Also present were Region 1 Zone 2 chairperson Amy Yeoh Kheng Ngoh, Lions Club of Penang Outreach president Gan Chee Wei, organising chairman Soon Chin Kim and membership director Ong Khai Pheng.
