THE launch of daily direct flights between Shanghai and Penang by Spring Airlines will further strengthen Penang’s tourism sector and enhance its international connectivity, says Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.

“With this daily service, Penang is now directly connected to one of China’s most dynamic cities, strengthening its position as a premier destination for Chinese visitors,” he said.

Spring Airlines will commence daily flights from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Penang International Airport (PEN) beginning Jan 30, 2026, becoming the third carrier to operate the Shanghai–Penang route after Juneyao Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.

Yeoh said the flights will operate under flight numbers 9C7295 and 9C7250 using Airbus A320 aircraft.

“The flight will arrive in Penang at 2.30pm and depart for Shanghai at 3.30pm local time, providing seamless round-trip connectivity for travellers,” he said.

He added that the route covers a distance of approximately 3,645km with an estimated flight time of five hours and 50 minutes.

“This improved accessibility is expected to drive higher tourist arrivals from Shanghai and surrounding regions, as China remains one of Malaysia’s most important source markets,” he said.

Yeoh noted that while the initial approval is for a seasonal period, strong demand could support an extension or permanent service

.

“The success of this route may pave the way for a longer-term operation, reflecting the growing appeal of Penang among Chinese travellers,” he said.

He said increased connectivity would generate positive economic spill-over effects for local businesses and communities.

“This growth will enrich Penang’s cultural and hospitality landscape and strengthen the state’s tourism ecosystem,” he said.

Yeoh also said the expansion of air links reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with China, particularly in aviation and tourism.

“I look forward to welcoming more visitors from Shanghai to experience Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage charm, world-renowned cuisine and diverse attractions, reinforcing Penang’s role as a gateway to Malaysia and the region,” he said.

Frequent traveller Wong Siew Wei, 40, lauded the move and is looking forward to boarding the airline next month.

“It will surely improve the connectivity between both cities,” said Wong, who runs a logistics business overseas.
