PENANGITES have been advised to do their part by registering for the Covid-19 vaccination via the MySejahtera app to ensure the herd immunity target is achieved.

State Local Government, Housing, Country and Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo called upon the people to quickly register themselves for the vaccines.

“From the data received till yesterday, a total of 226,690 Penangites have registered themselves through the MySejahtera application to receive vaccines.

“This number is still low as we have a total of 1.78 million people in the state. Mathematically, it’s only about 10 to 15% who had registered.

“Hence, I would like to strongly urge all the Penangites to register themselves. In fact, I have already received my first round of vaccine and I will be going for a second jab on March 26.

“Everything is good,” he told reporters after conducting a spot check on the standard operating procedures (SOPs) compliance at Pulau Tikus Market this morning.

The first phase of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, which began from February to April this year, is meant for the 500,000 frontliners in the country.

The second phase, which will be from April to August, is for the high-risk group, comprising senior citizens.

The third phase, from May to February next year, is for those aged 18 and above.

From the inspection at Pulau Tikus Market, Jagdeep was happy to note that many of the market-goers were adhering to the relevant SOPs.

“To date, I can see that every Penangite is doing well in SOP compliance.

“This will help to break the chain of infection once and for all,” he added.

Jagdeep said till March this year, a total of 30 premises have been instructed to close for violating SOPs.

He pointed out that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) would not hesitate to take stern action against those flouting SOPs.

“Both local councils have achieved around 99% of SOPs compliance till today. Congrats!” he said.

MBPP secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali noted that more people would throng the wet markets, especially during weekends.

“On our side, we will increase our effort by adding more personnel to ensure everyone is complying with the regulations,” he said.

Also present were Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit and MBPP councillor Connie Tan Hooi Peng.
