Short but fair, says CM Chow on the two-week GE15 campaign period

THE 14-day campaign period provided for all political parties and candidates contesting in the 15th General Election is relatively short but fair, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

The Election Commission had earlier announced that GE15 would take place on Nov 19, while Nomination Day has been fixed on Nov 5 and early voting on Nov 15.

“The Nomination Day is on Nov 5, and since the parliament was dissolved on Oct 10, those involved would have 24 to 25 days to prepare.

“There is enough time for all the parties contesting.

“As a whole, it is relatively fair for everyone,” Chow told reporters during a brief press conference in George Town today.

He also said that the candidates should be able to pitch their respective agendas and reach out to the voters within the given period.

Separately, when asked about incumbent Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto’s decision to not contest in the GE15, Chow said the party accepted the decision with a heavy heart.

“We accept her decision.

“We learn that she will continue to help the community, especially by spearheading human rights issues.

“She has decided, hence, the party will field a new candidate (for Batu Kawan).

“The party will choose a suitable candidate for the seat,” Chow said.

He said DAP would consider prospective candidates and their suitability.

“DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke will be announcing the names of the chosen candidates two to three days before Nov 5,” Chow added.
