MORE than 700 players are expected to compete in the upcoming Penang Chief Minister Cup Interschool Table Tennis Championships 2025, scheduled for next month.

Organised by the Penang Table Tennis Association (PTTA) with the support of the Penang Education Department, the tournament is sponsored by the Penang Chief Minister’s office.

The championship will be held from Oct 4 to 5 at the PTTA Training Centre in Macallum Street Ghaut.

PTTA organising chairman Datuk Ang Aing Thye said a total of 288 teams from 80 schools have registered, making this the largest edition since the tournament was first introduced in 2019.

“The top three teams in each category will receive a trophy, medals, certificates of achievement, and cash prizes of RM300, RM200 and RM100 respectively,” he said during a press conference at PTTA Training Centre today.

Additional cash prizes will also be awarded to the fourth-place team (RM80), fifth to eighth (RM50 each), and ninth to twelfth (RM30 each).

Ang added that the best-performing school of the championships will be awarded the Penang Chief Minister Challenge Trophy. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is scheduled to officiate the opening ceremony on Oct 4.

PTTA president Datuk Michael Tiah noted that the standard of table tennis in the sport has risen significantly.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister’s political secretary Lau Keng Ee highlighted that the tournament, now in its fifth edition, is a testament to the growing enthusiasm and support for table tennis in the community.

He praised the commitment of everyone involved, from coaches and young athletes to parents and organisers, for contributing to the event’s success.

“Training at school provides a strong foundation, but it is through competition that players gain invaluable experience and truly refine their skills.

“Over the years, Penang has hosted numerous tournaments, and the consistent improvement of local players underscores the vital role grassroots competitions play in nurturing talent.

“This event is more than just a competition; it is a chance for families to come together, cheer on their children, and celebrate their achievements.

“I hope this tournament continues to flourish and inspire future generations of players,” he added.
