A MULTI-PURPOSE hall in Taman Tun Sardon has undergone a major upgrade with the installation of 12 air-conditioning units and floor improvements costing about RM354,500, fully funded by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

The installation of air-conditioning units marks a significant improvement, as the facility previously lacked air-conditioning.

Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan said the overall upgrading works were completed within six months.

She stated that the building was previously in a dilapidated condition, requiring more extensive work, which resulted in a longer construction period.

“With the upgrading completed, the facility has been transformed into a new space designed with a green building concept,” she said.

Tan said the venue has yet to be opened to the public as upgrading works are still ongoing at the nearby Astaka, located below the building.

“The Astaka is also being upgraded and is expected to be completed within this year, although I cannot confirm the exact month,” she said.

She said once the Astaka reopens, temporary usage of the space will end, parking will be available, and the community facility can then be officially opened for public bookings.

Tan said the upgraded venue is intended to function as a community centre, hosting festive celebrations and various local community activities.

“I would like to thank MBPP for its continuous support in upgrading the facilities, which has brought greater convenience to residents in this area,” she said.

On recreational facilities, Tan said a popular hub for pickleball, with five public pickleball courts already available alongside several privately managed courts.

She said requests had been made to add more pickleball courts, but part of the site is occupied by a badminton court that will remain unchanged.

“We are discussing with MBPP the possibility of adding three or four pickleball courts on the available open space, subject to feasibility,” she said.

Tan said the upgrades are also aimed at encouraging residents, especially senior citizens, to stay active and maintain good health.

“With better facilities, residents are encouraged to come out, exercise and stay engaged with the community,” she said.

She added that the venue was previously a badminton court of the same size and was often fully booked, especially at night, but bookings were temporarily suspended due to the upgrading works.

“With the enhanced facilities, there may be adjustments to usage fees, but we will ensure any revision is reasonable and affordable for the community,” she said.
