THE spirit of sportsmanship, unity, and youthful energy came alive as UNITAR International University (UNITAR) brought its annual flagship sporting event, UNITARLympics, to Penang this year.

Gathering more than 1,000 students and staff from 25 UNITAR branches nationwide, the three-day event will feature competitions in over 20 sports, including futsal, basketball, volleyball, netball, and even e-sports, reflecting a balance between physical and digital pursuits in today’s modern era.

UNITAR vice-chancellor and chief academic officer of the UNITAR Education Group, Tan Sri Dr. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, said the event was made possible with strong support from the Penang government and various non-governmental organisations.

“We have prepared all the necessary facilities for our travelling students, academic and support staff. Through collaboration with the Penang government and NGOs, we successfully achieved this goal.

“UNITAR is proud because 70% of our students are from the B40 group, who are determined and passionate about achieving big in life.

“Each student deserves equal opportunity to showcase their talents and potential. Sports not only build confidence and teamwork but also prepare our graduates to be well-rounded and competitive,” he said in his speech during the opening ceremony of UNITARLympics at the Penang Youth and Sports Complex in Gelugor today.

He also stressed UNITAR’s strong stance against bullying, assuring that the university’s hostels and environment are safe and supportive.

“Bullying has become a national issue, and we take it very seriously at UNITAR. Our students are mature, and our hostels are well-protected,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow warmly welcomed UNITAR’s presence in Penang, calling the state not only an emerging hub for education, investment, and technology, but also a world-renowned food haven.

“On behalf of the people of Penang, I welcome all UNITAR students and staff to our beautiful state.

“While you may be agile on the field, do not be surprised if you find yourselves equally agile queuing up for nasi kandar, pasembur at Gurney Drive, or laksa in Air Itam.

“Penang is more than just a place for learning and honing talents; it is also a destination for food, culture, and creating cherished memories with loved ones,” he said.

Chow also highlighted Penang’s continued commitment to empowering youth and sports development at the grassroots level.

“As proof of this commitment, the Penang government allocated RM77,300 under the Youth Development Fund in May this year to support 41 youth organisations and local sports activities across the state.

“This reflects our dedication to nurturing an active and progressive youth movement,” he said.

Also present earlier was UNITAR Education Group chief executive officer Datuk Puvan Balachandran.
