THE Women in Zcience (WiZ) 2026 programme was officially launched at Tech Dome Penang today, marking another milestone in Penang’s commitment to empowering young women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The initiative, organised by Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) in collaboration with Tech Dome Penang, brings together educators, industry leaders, and students in a shared mission to inspire the next generation of female innovators.
Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze said the programme reflects Penang’s forward-looking spirit and its commitment to nurturing inclusive talent.

“This year, we celebrate International Women’s Day by building an inclusive society that requires intentional effort. In Penang, we believe in empowering women and girls, not only in community roles but also in critical fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” she said in her speech.
Phee emphasised that initiatives like WiZ play a crucial role in providing young girls with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and mentorship.
“By giving young girls the opportunity to experience STEM through hands-on learning, mentorship and real-world exposure, we are not only building skills but also confidence and aspiration,” she added.
The programme is supported by key industry sponsors, including James Dyson Foundation, Intel Malaysia, ViTrox, Flex, Gamuda and Jabil, with MI Technovation contributing to provide meaningful exposure and participation for students.

According to the organisers, WiZ 2026 is structured into five phases, including STEM learning journeys, engineering and chemistry workshops, competitions, and factory visits, providing students with practical exposure to real-world applications and problem-solving skills.
PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng said the programme continues to serve as a platform to inspire confidence and spark interest in STEM careers among young women.
“WIZ continues to be a key platform in inspiring interest in STEM among young women, helping to build confidence, capability and aspiration for future careers in science and technology,” she said.
In her speech, Ong also shared the inspiring story of Bertha Benz, highlighting how the German automotive pioneer became a symbol of courage and innovation.
“Her story reminds us that women have always been pioneers of change. When young women are empowered with knowledge and opportunity, they have the potential to shape a more innovative, inclusive, and progressive future,” she said.

The programme involves 15 participating schools across Penang, providing hundreds of students with access to STEM exposure and mentorship.
Phee noted that the initiative demonstrates the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and educators.

“Your support plays a vital role in investing in these young minds. By working together, we are contributing to a future that is brighter, more inclusive, and fuller of potential,” she said.
She added that Penang remains committed to building a thriving STEM ecosystem where every girl is allowed to excel.
“May each of you leave here not only inspired but confident in your ability to shape the future, break boundaries and become leaders in your own right. The future of Penang is bright, and it shines even brighter with all of you in it,” she said.
