IT was a night to remember as over 200 talented individuals from diverse backgrounds came together under the universal language of movement at the Open World Dancesport Penang Championship 2025, held at the Berjaya Hotel in Burmah Road this evening.
More than a competition of rhythm and grace, the championship carried a heartfelt mission: to raise funds for the Association Yee Ran Jing Sheh Handicapped Children’s Home.

Organising chairlady Annie Oo expressed her gratitude to participants and supporters, highlighting the meaningful impact of the event.

“This event is about more than just trophies and rankings. At its heart lies a powerful mission to uplift the lives of children at the Yee Ran Jing Sheh Handicapped Children’s Home.
“Every graceful step, every cheer from the crowd, and every competitor’s effort directly contribute to this noble cause. Tonight, all of you have not just danced, but you have made a meaningful difference!” she said in her speech.
The event was graced by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who praised the competition for its inclusivity and community spirit.
Also in attendance were Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Penang Youth and Sports Department (JSBNPP) director Mozakir Buyong Mokhtar, Malaysia Ballroom Dancers Association president Datuk Dr Henry Ooi Kwee Lim, Malaysia United Dancesport Association president Johnston Lim and the competition chief adjudicator Antony Keong.
In his speech, Chow commended the event’s accessible format, which featured multiple categories, including Rank New, New Beginner, Medalist, Open, Amateur, and Elite.

“What I love most about this championship is how inclusive it is. Whether you are a beginner taking your first steps or a seasoned dancer with years of experience, there is a place for you here.
“Tonight proves that Penang is not only known for its food and commerce, but also thriving in arts, sports, and cultural expression,” he said.
Chow also applauded the event’s charitable mission, noting that the championship has consistently supported good causes for the past seven years.
“This isn’t just about dancing; it is about doing good. I was informed that this year alone, RM30,000 was raised and donated to Yee Ran Jing Sheh. That is truly remarkable.
“This spirit of compassion and community aligns perfectly with our Penang2030 vision which is to build a more inclusive, balanced, and caring society,” he added.
