“UNLABELLED,” the theme chosen for this year’s Autism Awareness Campaign (AAC26), delivers a meaningful and powerful message as efforts ramp up to make the programme a success.
The campaign, now in its ninth year, is spearheaded by the Penang Shine Like Stars Association (PSLSA) in collaboration with non-governmental organisations, the private sector, and the community. It will be held at MCKL College, Pykett Campus, on April 25 from 5pm to 9pm.
State EXCO for Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Lim Siew Khim described this year’s theme as timely and important, noting that individuals with autism and special needs are often viewed through limiting labels.
“Labels that restrict opportunities, shape perceptions, and create unnecessary barriers. AAC26 challenges us to move beyond that — to see individuals for who they are: their identity, abilities, and potential,” she said at a press conference at Komtar today.
Lim added that AAC26 aims to raise RM80,000 to support programmes and services for families with special needs, while also creating platforms for public engagement, understanding, and inclusivity.
She commended PSLSA for its 15 years of dedication to supporting families and fostering a more compassionate and understanding society in Penang.
“We want to send a clear message about the kind of society we are building — one where everyone is accepted, respected, and given a place to belong,” she said.

PSLSA chairman Kathrine Koo echoed Lim’s sentiments, stressing that individuals with autism and special needs are too often defined by labels.
“A label may limit what we see, but it should never define who a person is. That is why AAC exists — not just to raise awareness, but to call for acceptance in action,” she said, urging for a shift in perception.
To bring the message to life, the campaign will use a universal language — music — under the theme “Music for Everyone: One Stage · One Space · One Voice”.

The event will kick off at 5pm with “Celebrating Abilities,” featuring performances by individuals with special needs — a reminder that every individual has unique gifts worth celebrating.
At 6pm, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, together with Lim, will officiate the opening ceremony.
This will be followed by a live concert from 7pm to 9pm, featuring Malaysian artistes performing alongside individuals with special needs — a showcase of true inclusion.
“Music breaks barriers, connects hearts, and reminds us that beyond our differences, we are one community,” Koo said.

Among the performers to watch is Lim Liang Han, a top eight finalist from Stars Academy 2 Malaysia (2022–2023), who was born with Level 1 autism.
“His presence on stage is a powerful reminder that ability is not defined by labels, but by opportunity, courage, and belief. The concert will culminate in a meaningful finale where individuals with special needs and professional artistes stand together as one voice,” she added.
Another highlight is the Family Carnival, featuring a selection of Penang’s well-loved delicacies and unique goods, supported by partners such as Sin Boon Kee Coffee, along with game booths sponsored by Olive Tree Hotel, Penang.
Visitors can also explore the Sensory & Empathy Gallery, sponsored by Senses At Work.
“Through this gallery, we invite the public to step into the sensory world of individuals with autism — to feel what they may feel, to see what they may see, and to better understand how everyday environments can sometimes be overwhelming.
“We also encourage attendees to visit the ‘Expression of Emotions’ exhibition, which offers a deeper glimpse into the inner thoughts and feelings of individuals with autism,” Koo said.

Admission to the event is free. To date, RM40,000 has been raised through coupon sales and donations.
“At its core, AAC26 is about this: every helping hand matters, every act of understanding matters, and every voice matters,” she said.
Koo called on the public to be part of the movement — not just to attend an event, but to stand together in support of acceptance and inclusion.
“Let us move forward together as one community: Unlabelled. United. Inclusive,” she said.
