Achieving sustainability goals through state and private partnerships

THE collaboration between the Penang government and private entities is important to bring positive changes to the state’s environment, society and economy.

Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan said PGC had always emphasised the importance of such mutual collaboration with the private companies through the Green Industry Programme.

 

“It is vital for us now to embrace the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) concept. Penang is now transitioning towards the revolution.

 

“This is in line with the Penang 2030 vision as ESG helps the state to gear up to become a family-focused green and smart state to inspire the nation.

The remarkable event taking place at Flex Penang in Perai.

“ESG will also give the state a competitive advantage when it comes to attracting foreign investors,” she said in her speech during the Environmental, Health, and Safety Week 2023 at Flex Penang in Perai today.

 

The event was held in conjunction with the Earth and World Environmental Day.

 

It was aimed to strengthen renewable energy implementation, support zero waste to landfill initiative through the food waste reduction programme, ensure the safety of Flex employees through their commuting safety programme, and promote environmental, health, and occupational safety at the workplace.

 

Tan said the Green Industry Programme focuses on reducing environmental impacts of production within the manufacturing sector.

 

It benefits our local small medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as achieve sustainability goals,” she added.

 

Flex Penang vice-president (operations) Viswanathan Paramasivam said he was pleased to witness the remarkable ceremony.

 

“The theme for this year’s is ‘Progressing Towards 2030 Sustainability Goals’ as our vision is to become the most trusted global technology, supply chain, and manufacturing solutions.

 

“We have been collaborating diligently with numerous governmental organisations, including PGC, the Department of Environment (DOE), the Department of Occupational Safety and Health and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).

 

“Today’s event is a huge step forward towards realising our sustainability vision,” he added.

 

Among those present were state DOE deputy director Azman Shah Ismail, state Department of Occupational Safety and Health director Hairozie Asri, Road Transport Department Malaysia Road Safety and Corporate head Shahrul Harun, MBSP councillor Tan Chee Teong, MBSP assistant veterinary officer Chew Eng Seng, and state PERKESO director Mustafa Draman.
