AVIATION plays a pivotal role in driving tourism and economic development in Penang, says state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
Emphasising the critical link between air connectivity and regional growth, Wong said Penang’s advancement as a key destination in Southeast Asia hinges on a robust and sustainable aviation sector.

“Aviation sustainability is not just a theoretical concept for us, it directly impacts our ability to expand, attract more visitors, generate employment, and protect the environment.
“Efficient air operations mean lower emissions, improved connectivity, and more sustainable growth for destinations like Penang,” he said.
Wong was speaking at the Welcome Reception of the ASEAN Workshop on Aviation Sustainability – Operational Improvements and Efficiency Gains, held this evening at The Tamarra by Irama Dining in George Town.

The event was attended by industry leaders and stakeholders, including Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) deputy chief executive officer Capt Md Jani Md Dom and Air Asia chief sustainability officer Yap Mun Ching.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of Penang International Airport (PIA), Wong said the airport’s growth reflects the state’s rising stature in the aviation landscape.
“Based on 2024 data from CAAM, Penang International Airport has overtaken Kota Kinabalu International Airport to become the second busiest airport in Malaysia in terms of aircraft movements, just behind Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
“This milestone not only reflects the growing strength of Penang’s tourism sector but also cements the state’s role as a vital international gateway,” he said.
Wong further noted the positive trajectory of new air routes into Penang, underscoring the state’s increasing connectivity.
“Since August 2023, Penang has welcomed 14 inaugural flights from various international destinations and the momentum continues. On June 26, we will proudly receive the inaugural flight from Phnom Penh to Penang!,” he announced.
With sustainable aviation practices and expanding flight routes, Wong concluded by saying Penang is well-positioned to thrive as a responsible and dynamic aviation hub in the region.
