MOUNT Miriam Cancer Hospital, a pioneer in cancer treatment with nearly five decades of dedicated service, has officially received approval for its tax-exempt status.

The hospital officially received the confirmation of approval on July 9 under the subsections 127(3A) and 44(11C) of the Income Tax Act 1967.

It is effective for a period of five years, from 2026 to 2030.

Although the approval has been granted, MMCH’s tax-exempt status remain contingent upon filling several compliance requirements as outlined by the Ministry of Finance.

Expressing her delight on behalf of the hospital was its board director, Soon Mun Har, who calls the status a milestone for the hospital as a not-for-profit, mission-driven hospital.

“We are especially grateful to Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying for making time to be with us today.

Your presence is not only an honour but a source of deep encouragement to our community, our team, and our supporters.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the team at the MOF, especially the directors and officers who guided us with insight, patience, and professionalism throughout this process.

“Your commitment to good governance has been instrumental in helping charitable institutions like ours.

“We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to state Youth, Sports, and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi, who has supported us steadfastly throughout our application journey, facilitating discussions and offering timely guidance.

“Your unwavering belief in Mount Miriam’s mission has made a real and lasting difference,” Soon said in her speech during a special programme to announce the hospital’s tax-exempt status at its premises today.

Soon also assured that as the hospital nears its 50th anniversary next year, the approval for a tax-exempt status was a timely one as it marks the hospital’s meaningful affirmation of its mission to the community.

“We are also embarking on a long-term endowment strategy to enhance our financial sustainability.

“This recent approval supports that direction, and strengthens our ability to serve generations to come,” she added.

Lim, meanwhile, in her speech, commended Mount Miriam’s tremendous growth over the years, cementing its commitment and dedication to providing the best of services for cancer patients.

She also emphasised that the approval of tax-exempt for the hospital was not merely a policy decision but beyond it, reflecting the values and importance of the current Madani Government in sustainability.

“This is a statement of values. It reflects our government’s commitment to fairness, people-first governance, and social impact.

“We are building a future where quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a guaranteed right, no matter who you are or how much you earn.

“The Madani Government strongly believes that no one should be left behind, especially when it comes to healthcare.

By supporting institutions like Mount Miriam, we hope to encourage more private and non-for-profit hospitals to adopt similar models of charity based care and to work in close partnership with the government to realise the national health agenda outlined in 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).

Gooi, who was also present earlier, congratulated the hospital on its tax-exempt status obtained, and has called for greater and stronger commitment to the people.

Also, earlier, Lim and Gooi were taken on a tour of five hospice rooms at the hospital made available for end of life care for cancer patients.

It was learnt that the rooms are free of charge, and according to Soon, compassion and empathy are two very important things that cannot be replaced with money.
