THE Penang government is committed to improving the livelihoods of its people through welfare initiatives, social support, cash aid, affordable housing, and better mobility and accessibility.

However, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised that true progress cannot be achieved by the government alone.

Speaking at the Salvation Army Open Day Food Fair at Logan Road today, Chow reminded Penangites that collective effort is the key to building an equitable society.

A large crowd turned up at the Salvation Army Open Day Food Fair at Logan Road today.

“A government of the day can only do so much; real change depends on all of us doing our part. For an equitable society to take root, it requires all our efforts,” he said.

Chow described the food fair as more than just a fundraising event; it was a celebration of compassion, care, and community spirit.

“When you spend here, don’t just look at the price – look at the bigger cause it contributes to. Every plate of food and every snack you enjoy helps to uplift lives. In other words, by eating, you are also doing charity!” he said.

Chow also praised The Salvation Army for its enduring service in Penang.

“For over 80 years, The Salvation Army has been a beacon of hope for children, families, and those in need. Today, we are reminded once again of how much their work matters,” Chow said.

To support the initiative, Chow announced an allocation of RM15,000 towards the food fair, which aims to raise RM160,000.

“I hope this contribution encourages more Penangites to give generously. May this Salvation Army Open Day Food Fair be a success and may it inspire us to continue building a kinder, fairer, and more inclusive Penang,” he added.

Also present were The Salvation Army Women’s Ministries of the Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand Territory territorial secretary Lieutenant Colonel Stacey Cross, Malaysia regional officers Captain Andrew Lo and Captain Fiona Lo, and Penang corps officers Lieutenants Royston Remus and Audrea Remus.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Royston highlighted that the food fair’s fundraising target would go towards covering the Children’s Home’s monthly operational costs, which amount to about RM60,000.

“These expenses include food, medical care, school supplies, transportation, utilities, staff salaries, and maintenance – all essential to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children who cannot live with their families due to poverty, illness, incarceration, or loss,” he explained.
