SINCE taking office as the Padang Lalang assemblyman in 2023, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen has made it a priority to address key local issues and continue the legacy of effective leadership in the constituency.
Gooi, who also serves as the Penang executive councillor for Youth, Sports, and Health, expressed his appreciation to his predecessors for their significant contributions to the development of the area.
“I feel truly grateful and fortunate because the previous assemblypersons for Padang Lalang namely Datuk Seri Chong Eng and Datuk Michael Tan have laid a strong foundation for this constituency, especially in terms of infrastructure development and resolving various local issues.
“Thanks to their hard work, stepping into this role has been relatively smoother for me, especially in terms of continuing development initiatives.
“That said, I remain committed to doing my very best to serve the people of Padang Lalang and to carry forward the legacy of both former representatives, particularly in infrastructure advancement,” Gooi said.
Speaking to Buletin Mutiara during an exclusive interview at the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) Sports and Recreational Complex in Jalan Betek, Bukit Mertajam today, Gooi also reflected on his personal connection to the constituency.
“I grew up here in Padang Lalang, so I understand the local issues well. I will do everything I can to ensure that this constituency remains not only rapidly developing but also sustainable and livable for all residents,” he said.
Gooi also highlighted several major projects already underway during his first term.
One of the most significant is the RM24 million redevelopment of the iconic Bukit Mertajam Market, funded by the Federal Government through the Local Government Development Ministry.
“The redevelopment is split into five components namely RM8 million for the new market building, RM8.5 million for a multi-storey car park, RM5 million for infrastructure upgrades, RM500,000 for a temporary market, and RM1 million for the Bukit Mertajam Creative Centre,” he detailed.
Additionally, several road-widening projects have been completed in the Padang Lalang area to ease traffic congestion, part of Gooi’s broader commitment to improving daily life for residents.
He also touched on the introduction of the WoodHaven community space within the People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Padang Lalang.
“This initiative by the state government aims to breathe new life into open spaces, creating inviting green areas that foster stronger bonds among families and communities,” he said.
Gooi also provided updates on the much-anticipated redevelopment of the 135-year-old Bukit Mertajam Hospital, a long-standing institution and vital healthcare provider for the Central Seberang Perai district.
“This is something we have been actively working on. During the last State Legislative Assembly sitting, I shared the good news that the Ministry of Health (MoH) has approved the redevelopment.
“To support this project, the state government has proposed nearby state land for the redevelopment to take place.
“Discussions are currently ongoing with MoH to work through technical aspects and planning details. We hope to implement the project in the near future,” he said.
He noted the timing is particularly significant as the hospital marks its 135th anniversary this year.
“It’s time we modernise this essential facility to offer better medical services and improve the quality of life for the people of Bukit Mertajam and the surrounding areas.
“As a local myself, I am passionate about making Padang Lalang a model constituency where development is fast yet sustainable, and where infrastructure enhances the everyday lives of our people,” Gooi concluded.
