THE Bukit Mertajam Hospital proudly celebrated its 135th anniversary today, marking more than a century of dedicated service to the community.
The special celebration was graced by Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, who congratulated the hospital on reaching such a remarkable milestone.
Gooi also announced that the state government has committed to allocating 3.2 hectares of land, currently occupied by the abandoned Bukit Mertajam Resthouse, to facilitate the hospital’s future expansion.

“The land, located just across the road from the hospital, will provide ample space for a new wing.

“This matter has been discussed several times with Human Resources Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong,” Gooi said in his speech.

He said the Penang government is ready to provide the necessary land to enable the Ministry of Health to develop this much-needed new wing.
“I hope that the groundbreaking ceremony for this upgrading project can be carried out at least before the end of the current state administration’s term,” he said.
Also in attendance were State Health Director Datuk Dr Fazilah Shaik Allaudin and Bukit Mertajam Hospital director Dr Prashant Subramanian.
Dr Fazilah highlighted that the 135th anniversary was made even more meaningful as Bukit Mertajam Hospital was recently honoured with the ‘Most Sustainable Hospital Award’ at the Hospital Management Asia Awards 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

“May this 135th anniversary serve as a catalyst for us to continue delivering healthcare with integrity, compassion, and excellence.
“From heritage to excellence, Bukit Mertajam Hospital stands as a beacon of service,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr Prashant reflected on the hospital’s humble beginnings, tracing its establishment back to October 1, 1890, when it started with only four wards and 42 beds.
“This history is a reminder that we must continue to serve with dedication and professionalism, ensuring the well-being of our patients, especially the local community,” he added.
The celebration also paid tribute to Matron Zainab Ismail, 90, a former supervisory nurse who served at Bukit Mertajam Hospital in the 1970s.
She delivered a heartfelt special address, honouring the hospital’s rich history and legacy.
