The Cap Feri rice, launched by the Penang government in December last year, has received an overwhelming response from the public, with stocks frequently selling out within just two hours at Agro MADANI sales carnivals across the state.
State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said that as of March 20, a total of 16,000 bags of rice, weighing 80 metric tonnes, had been sold. The sales have generated RM272,000 in revenue.
Responding to a question from Izhar Shah Arif Shah (PN–Seberang Jaya) on the effectiveness of the programme during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting today, Fahmi (PH–Pantai Jerejak) said the Cap Feri rice is distributed through Agro MADANI Sales events organised by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP), and the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM).
Sold at RM16 per 5kg pack, Cap Feri rice is currently among the most affordable brands in the market. It is specifically targeted at the B40 income group and has benefited an estimated 48,000 individuals in its first three months.
“The rice has become a star product at these events, with each location typically allocated at least 500 packs — all of which are usually snapped up within two hours,” Fahmi said, speaking on behalf of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He added that the initiative is still in its trial phase, using imported rice to temporarily address the shortfall in local rice supply.

“The strong demand reflects a clear need for affordable, quality rice among the lower-income group,” he said.
Although no formal public satisfaction survey has been conducted due to financial constraints, Fahmi said the state government is open to implementing a more comprehensive monitoring system in the future if needed.
