HUNDREDS of Penangites gathered last night (May 16) at Sunshine Central, Air Itam, to take part in the Relay for Life Malaysia 2025 Luminaria Night, a heartfelt tribute to those affected by cancer.
The event was led by Madam Tan Lean Kee, wife of Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who joined participants in a symbolic lap around the mall’s main atrium.
Each person carried a luminaria bag—softly glowing in the evening light—to honour loved ones lost to cancer and celebrate those bravely fighting the disease.
Organised by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), the annual event aims to raise public awareness about cancer, while emphasising the importance of early detection and regular screening, which can significantly improve survival rates.
Tan, who also serves as president of Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara Pulau Pinang (PWMPP), praised the NCSM for organising what she described as a moving and meaningful event.

“Tonight is dedicated especially to the brave cancer survivors, the dedicated caregivers, and the families who offer unwavering support, where everyone gathers to remember, celebrate and strengthen our fight against cancer.

“It is a night that brings us closer together in the challenging journey of battling this disease.

“We in Penang are deeply honoured that NCSM has chosen our state as the first of six locations for Relay for Life Malaysia 2025 Luminaria Night.

“This decision underscores the significant and valued relationship between the Penang government and NCSM – a partnership crucial to our ongoing efforts in combating cancer within the state,” said Tan in her speech.

Also present were Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang, NCSM deputy director (community engagement) Mandy Thoo, NCSM council member Dr Azlina Firzah Abdul Aziz and NCSM ambassador Tracie Chan.
Tan also highlighted the profound symbolism of the luminaria bags, calling them ‘beacons of collective hope and remembrance.’
“These glowing Luminaria paper bags each represent a life touched by cancer. Let us take this moment to remember them, to celebrate together tonight, and to renew our commitment to fight against cancer with the Luminaria light acting as a guiding symbol in the fight against cancer.
“To the brave cancer survivors, the dedicated caregivers, and the families and friends who offer unwavering support, please know that you are not alone.
“Tonight, and in the days ahead, we stand with you, united in hope and strength,” she concluded.
