A VIRAL video showing a heated exchange between a state assemblyman and a local contractor has sparked discussions on leadership and emotional intelligence among elected officials.

The incident reportedly happened in George Town, where roadworks had temporarily blocked access for some residents.

The clip quickly circulated on social media, drawing public attention to the conduct of local representatives.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow addressed the matter, emphasising understanding and constructive resolution.

“I have been informed that a couple of state executive councillors and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran have met with the contractor to understand the situation.

“They have also conveyed their apologies to the affected workers, and I hope they are accepted,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) today.

Chow noted procedural shortcomings in managing the roadworks, which left residents without access for extended periods.

“Perhaps there was a shortcoming in why the road was blocked without an alternative route.

“This needs to be reviewed, as it clearly caused inconvenience to residents,” he said.

Pointing to a bigger lesson, the chief minister stressed the importance of emotional intelligence in public service.

“I hope all our elected representatives possess good EQ to handle such matters.

“That is crucial in managing both public expectations and team dynamics,” he added.
