THE RM3.3 million upgrading of the Taman Tun Sardon food court into a modern, green-concept facility has officially begun, but concerns have emerged over delays in construction progress.

Connie Tan (PH – Seri Delima) expressed appreciation to Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and his team for their swift action in resolving several issues highlighted by traders operating at the temporary site.

These included matters relating to ventilation, door installations and the addition of seating to improve comfort for both traders and patrons.

“I would like to thank the MBPP mayor for attending promptly to the concerns raised by our hawkers.

“Their cooperation has ensured that day-to-day operations at the temporary site remain smooth and safe,” Tan said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting in Light Street today.

Despite the positive steps taken, Tan noted that the project’s physical progress is significantly behind schedule.

According to the written reply she received, the upgrading works had reached only 15% completion as of 31 October 2025, far short of the 40% target, marking a 25% delay.

She said it is understood that the contractor is seeking an extension of time (EOT), but emphasised that the authorities must not allow unreasonable delays to disrupt community expectations.

“Any request for an EOT must be reasonable.

“More importantly, we need to address the root causes of the delay immediately so that the project does not continue to slip further,” she emphasised.

Tan called for tighter supervision from the relevant agencies to ensure the contractor receives adequate support and guidance to bring the works back on track.

“The people of Taman Tun Sardon have been waiting for this upgraded food court, and they deserve timely delivery.

“With strict monitoring and proper coordination, I believe we can ensure the community enjoys the benefits of this project without substantial further delays,” she said.

The project, once completed, is expected to provide a cleaner, greener and more comfortable trading environment for local hawkers and residents.
