THE Penang government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the gold and jewellery sector.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state was not only building an ecosystem that is globally competitive, but also rich in craftsmanship, cultural legacy, and innovation.
“In recent years, Seberang Perai, particularly the Batu Kawan area, has emerged as one of Penang’s most promising economic growth corridors.
“With this in mind, the Penang government laid the groundwork for the Batu Kawan Gold Industrial Zone, with the vision of developing a thriving industrial cluster and positioning Penang as a regional hub for gold trading and innovation.

“Today, I am pleased to report that two major developments in the zone are nearing completion and are expected to begin operations soon.
“These projects represent more than just infrastructure as they are milestones that will bring about high-skilled employment, technology transfer, and enhanced economic value for the entire industry,” Chow said in his speech during the 63rd-anniversary celebration of the Province Wellesley Gold and Silver Ornaments Merchants Association (PWGS) at Iconic Marjorie Hotel in Bayan Lepas today.
Chow commended the association and regarded this milestone not only as a reflection of longevity but also a testament to its enduring spirit of unity, resilience, and forward-looking leadership.
“Over the past six decades, your dedication and vision have played a pivotal role in the growth and transformation of Penang’s gold and jewellery industry, shaping it into the vibrant and competitive sector it is today,” he added.

Also present was the Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Associations of Malaysia president Datuk Chiah Hock Yew.
