THE Federal Government has been urged to expedite the implementation of the Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line project to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion, says Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik.

Speaking during the State Legislative Assembly session today, Goh (PH-Bukit Tambun) called on the Transport Ministry and MRT Corp to fast-track the project and ensure a direct link to Penang Sentral.

“This project is vital for improving mobility in Penang and will greatly reduce dependence on the Penang Bridge, particularly for residents in northern Seberang Perai.

“It is an urgent need to provide a more efficient public transport system for commuters who live in Seberang Perai but work on Penang island, complementing existing ferry and Rapid Penang bus services,” he said.

Goh also raised concerns over potential traffic congestion arising from the upcoming Juru–Sungai Dua elevated highway project. He called on the Works Ministry and the Malaysian Highway Authority to formulate a comprehensive traffic impact plan for both the construction and post-construction phases.

“The bottlenecks at Juru Auto City, Jalan Baru, the BKE roundabout, Jalan Permatang Pauh, and Jalan Sungai Dua have long been a burden to road users,” he said.

On local road infrastructure, Goh welcomed the Malaysian Highway Authority’s conceptual approval of the Sungai Bakap Bypass in November 2024. However, he questioned whether the Penang Public Works Department has adequate funding for the project’s implementation.

He suggested that the state commence preliminary work, including conducting a detailed traffic study.

Water supply was another key issue raised. Goh commended the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) for completing 22 scheduled pipe upgrade projects and for beginning construction at the Mengkuang Park Water Treatment Plant.

Nonetheless, he urged the state leadership to provide updates on the long-delayed Perak–Penang Water Project.

“We must finalise this project quickly to ensure a sustainable water supply, especially for residents in South Seberang Perai,” he stressed.

Goh also expressed appreciation to both the Federal and state governments for the successful completion of the Al Rayyan Mosque in Bandar Cassia.

However, he highlighted the traffic congestion that occurs along Jalan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi needs to be addressed.
