FIVE multinational companies are taking part in the PENFAC Cup Basketball Championship at Kompleks Sukan Azman Hashim in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

They are Intel, Plexus, HP Malaysia, Fath Group Asia and Bizlink.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the championship was a good platform for the players to get to know each other and make new friends as they came from different backgrounds and countries like the United States of America, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia.

“Sports is for all, is for everyone without any boundary. I am pleased to know that this championship is participated by players from different countries,” Soon said in his speech when he officiated the championship at USM on March 1.

“This is the first time the Penang government has initiated and endorsed such a basketball championship for all factories and SMEs in Penang.

“Through sports events among the factories and companies, I believe more athletes, especially from Penang, will be recruited by them,” he stressed.

Soon also expressed his gratitude to the organisers for their efforts and partners like
Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), Penang State Sports Council, USM and Penang Basketball Association for their support.

He added that since 2019, the state government has introduced the ‘Sports for All’ initiative in line with the Penang2030 vision for a family-focused green and smart state that inspires the nation.

“It’s an initiative to engage the community and public to be involved in sports activities and exercises so that we can create a healthier community,” Soon added.
