INDIVIDUALS from different backgrounds came together to contribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to the frontliners at the Penang Hospital.

On their behalf, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin handed over a total of 500 pieces of jumpsuits to the hospital’s representatives Dr Goh Hin Kwang (deputy director) and Dr Wong Khar Ming (assistant director) this morning.

Sim expressed his gratitude to the individuals for their initiative and thoughtfulness for the medical personnel, who need to be girded well.

The good Samaritans comprised Han Chiang High School graduates (Class of 84), Han Chiang Boys Scouts and Girl Guides, Zhongfa Pharmaceutical, SME (small medium enterprises) traders, friends and families.

“They contacted me three weeks ago to express their intention to contribute jumpsuits but due to delay in Customs clearance in China, the jumpsuits have only arrived now.

“Initially, 1,400 sets of PPE (worth RM 100,000) were supposed to be handed over to the hospital, but due to the strict inspection at the Chinese Customs, only 500 pieces have been released to Malaysia.

“We hope the remaining 900 pieces will arrive soon,’’ Sim said after handing over the PPEs.

Speaking on another matter, Sim, who was a former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, urged the Federal Government to look into food security issue.

“A few days ago, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, has raised their concern over the food security worldwide.

“Even though there is no shortage of food supplies globally, there is a problem concerning shipment because countries are unable to send out their products.

“So, we want the Federal Government to pay attention to this, as Malaysia may also be affected due to the supply chain issue. I also would like to urge Malaysian citizens to support our local products,’’ he added.
