CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow today joined a sea of more than 20,000 visitors in the heart of George Town’s heritage enclave to celebrate the 17th edition of the George Town Heritage Celebrations.
The streets came alive with colourful cultural activities, while a strong sense of community spirit filled the air.
Held in conjunction with George Town’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the event attracted people from all walks of life who eagerly explored the city’s historic streets. Many shared their excitement and joy at being part of the vibrant cultural showcase.

Accompanied by his entourage, Chow spent an hour walking through the celebration area, visiting various cultural booths, traditional workshops, and performance spaces. Along the way, he was seen enjoying and engaging with Penang’s rich multicultural legacy.
Locals and tourists alike greeted the chief minister and his state delegation warmly, with many taking the opportunity to interact and take photos with him.

Chow also joined in the festivities by participating in several cultural activities to mark the meaningful occasion with his presence and support.

The public’s enthusiasm was palpable as the crowd lined the streets, eager to witness the wide array of cultural activities. These include heritage games and chingay performance to traditional crafts, cultural dances, and food trails that captivated both children and adults.

After his walkabout, Chow expressed his delight at the festive atmosphere and the strong turnout of visitors.

“This year’s celebration, to be officially held on July 7 (Monday), marks a significant milestone, as several historic buildings will be open to the public. Many of these have been beautifully restored and are ready to welcome visitors in the spirit of cultural sharing and appreciation,” he said.
He also lauded the federal support for making the restoration of several heritage homes a reality.

“The opening of these restored homes is to be applauded, and we hope visitors take the opportunity to enjoy some of the delicacies and experiences offered,” he said.

Chow added that the open house concept allows visitors to step into these buildings, witness their transformation, and immerse themselves in the cultural diversity they represent.
He encouraged everyone to sample traditional foods and learn about different communities to gain a deeper appreciation of Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.

Joining Chow on the walkabout were Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Bagan Jermal assemblyman Chee Yeeh Keen, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee, and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
