Jazz workshop strikes a chord with Penang’s creative vision

JAZZ, with its roots in diversity, spontaneity, and soul, mirrors the rich cultural fabric that defines Penang, said state executive councillor Wong Hon Wai during the closing ceremony of the Penang Jazz Workshop at Gurney Bay Hotel today.

 

Wong, who heads the state’s Tourism and Creative Economy portfolio, emphasised that Penang’s tourism strategy is built on sustainability, creativity, and inclusivity.

“Our vision, as outlined in Penang2030, is to establish Penang as a premier destination by integrating culture, arts, and heritage into our tourism offerings.

 

“This approach not only nurtures a creative economy but also ensures balanced growth across both the island and the mainland,” Wong said.

 

He highlighted the importance of responsible and mindful tourism which is a key pillar in Penang’s tourism agenda which encourages visitors to honour the local culture and environment.

 

“Today, we are here not just to celebrate the timeless charm of jazz, but to reaffirm our collective commitment to this vision.

 

“Initiatives like the Penang Jazz Workshop play a vital role in cultivating creative talent, sparking innovation, and building meaningful connections among musicians, educators, and jazz lovers from all walks of life,” he said.

 

Organised by the Penang Jazz Society (PJS), the five-day workshop, held from July 7 to 11, featured a robust lineup of sessions, including jazz theory, practical masterclasses, and live performances.

PJS chairman Jerome Quah said the workshop was designed to be immersive and holistic, offering participants a deeper understanding of jazz while encouraging performance excellence.

“We are grateful to YB Wong and his office for their support and the grant that made this programme possible,” said Quah.

 

Wong added that the workshop goes beyond traditional educational initiatives.

 

“It is a dynamic platform for collaboration and innovation, a space where ideas are exchanged freely and new partnerships are born.

 

“This initiative contributes directly to the development of Penang’s creative economy, nurturing talent and creating performance opportunities that feed into our broader cultural and tourism ecosystem,” he added.

 

He expressed hope that Penang would continue to shine as a regional hub for jazz, attracting enthusiasts from around the world who appreciate both the music and the cultural depth of the destination.
