THIS year marks a remarkable milestone for lawyer, author and educator JJ Chan, the managing partner of CBE (Chan Ban Eng & Co).
He has been named the No. 1 Professional Negligence Lawyer in Malaysia for the Lexology Index Client Choice Awards 2026. The awards ceremony will take place on 19 March 2026 in London.
The honour is especially meaningful for JJ as it comes alongside five other regional honours he has received this year, including recognition in:
- Asia’s Top 30 Litigators
- Asia’s Super 50 Disputes Lawyers
- Malaysia Law Awards 2025
- South-East Asia Law Awards 2025 (Asian Legal Business)
- Asia Business Law Journal’s A List: Malaysia’s Top Lawyers 2025.

Established in 2005, Lexology Index Client Choice recognises lawyers, barristers, and consulting experts worldwide who excel in client care and service. Nominations are made solely by clients and corporate counsel, making the award especially significant.
JJ expressed immense gratitude to his business partners, clients, and in-house counsel who supported and nominated him, as well as to his partners and team at CBE for their commitment to excellence, responsiveness, and efficiency.
“To be the first Malaysian lawyer recognised across all six of these accolades is truly humbling.
“Thank you once again to all our friends, supporters, clients, and colleagues who have supported our work over the years.
“I remain fully committed to serving institutional clients across niche areas, in particular, financial lines — including medical negligence, corporate and directors’ liability, insurance/reinsurance, and to contributing to legal education through writing and open knowledge sharing,” JJ shared.
As JJ celebrates this milestone year, he remains deeply committed to giving back to the legal, professional and educational sectors, while upholding the standards of service that have earned him the trust of clients and peers alike. He hopes, in his own way, to raise Penang and Malaysia’s profile internationally through excellence in legal services and educational initiatives.
