MORE than 2,000 people are expected to attend Kids Day Out 2025, a community programme aimed at raising awareness of childhood cancer and supporting families affected by the disease.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the event, organised by the Friends of Childhood Cancer Northern Region (FOCCAN), will take place at Dewan CAT, Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang on Sept 20 from 8am to 1pm.
“September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Kids Day Out is not just about spreading awareness, but also about standing in solidarity with the children and families who are battling cancer,” he told reporters after a media briefing at Komtar today.
Gooi said this year’s edition will place special focus on emotional support for patients and their families, in collaboration with the state Health Department and his office.
“FOCCAN now has more than 850 members across the northern region. From their experience, emotional strain is often the main cause of family breakdowns after a child is diagnosed. This programme provides a safe space, professional guidance and encouragement for families to face the treatment journey with greater resilience,” he said.
The event will feature the participation of government agencies, NGOs and corporate partners, including Mentari, MAKNA, KOSPEN, UiTM’s Mathematics Department, Lions Club, MAPPAC, ATM infantry static exhibition, KPDN, FRU, PDRM, Bomba, Harley Davidson, Hong Bee Yamaha, and Maybank.
“Their presence strengthens the support network for children with cancer and their families,” Gooi added.
FOCCAN has also been providing ongoing assistance to families, including an initial RM300 aid for newly diagnosed patients, support for transplants and relapse cases, as well as milk, disposable diapers and emergency travel funds.
An estimated RM5,000 a month is needed to sustain these efforts in the northern region, according to Gooi.
“I urge the public and corporate bodies to contribute, whether in cash, essential goods, food support, or goodies for the 200 children who will take part. Contributions will go a long way in ensuring the success of Kids Day Out 2025,” Gooi said.
He added that FOCCAN will also recognise corporate partners, factories and contributors who have supported its initiatives over the past year.
“I believe Kids Day Out 2025 will continue to be an important platform to increase public awareness about childhood cancer and to foster solidarity in helping children fight for a better life,” he said.
FOCCAN chairman Maznah Tayib expressed hope that the event would help the public better understand the early signs of childhood cancer and where to seek help.
“The public can also access more reliable information, especially from the state Health Department,” she said.
Maznah added that the event is also about bringing joy to children while strengthening awareness efforts.
