TECH Dome Penang today launched the third edition of its Environmental Impact Challenge, a dynamic education initiative aimed at cultivating environmental awareness and sustainable innovation among secondary school students.
This year’s programme marks a significant milestone with Lam Research joining as the exclusive sponsor, injecting real-world industry expertise, mentorship, and corporate leadership into the student-driven sustainability challenge.
Ten secondary schools across Penang have been selected to participate in the four-month initiative, and they aremSMK Dato Mohd Nor Ahmad, SMK Permai Indah, SMK Dato Onn, SMJK Jit Sin 2, SMK Bukit Jambul, SMK Raja Tun Uda, Penang Chinese Girls’ Private High School, Methodist Boys School, SMK Abdullah Munshi, and SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam.
The programme officially kicked off today with an opening ceremony graced by Bagan Jermal assemblyman Chee Yeeh Keen, marking the start of an immersive journey in which student teams will tackle real-world environmental issues and design practical, sustainable solutions.
Over the course of the programme, participating students will benefit from mentorship by Lam Research engineers, gaining insights into sustainability practices within the semiconductor industry, while being guided in developing impactful projects.
The challenge will culminate in a final competition on October 16, where student teams will present their projects to a panel of judges, with awards recognising creativity, impact and feasibility.
Speaking at the event, Lam Manufacturing Malaysia (LMM) managing director and general manager EK Lee, expressed Lam’s deep commitment to both environmental stewardship and community engagement.
“We are committed to fostering innovation within our operations and across our communities.
“That is why we are thrilled to sponsor Tech Dome Penang’s Environmental Impact Challenge.
“By providing industry expertise and mentorship, we aim to inspire and equip these bright young minds to devise practical solutions to solve real-world problems,” Lee said in his speech during the launching ceremony at Tech Dome this morning.
He also highlighted Lam’s environmental achievements and local impact in Malaysia.
“Across our entire organisation, we are taking ownership to reduce our environmental footprint. We were among the first in the semiconductor industry to commit to 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.
These are not just numbers but they reflect our dedication to a healthier planet.
“Right here in Malaysia, our facility in Batu Kawan has installed over 5,700 solar panels, meeting 20% of our electricity needs and producing 13 megawatt-hours daily.
“In 2024 alone, our rainwater harvesting systems conserved 8 million litres of water, contributing to Lam’s global goal of saving 80 million gallons in water-stressed regions by year-end,” Lee added.
He further announced Lam’s recent partnership with Water Watch Penang for Projek Air Hijau, extending rainwater harvesting initiatives to schools across Penang.
“That is just one example of how Lam believes in making a positive impact in the communities where we operate.
“We are proud to work with strong local partners like Tech Dome to make meaningful contributions beyond our core operations,” he added.
Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi welcomed Lam Research as the exclusive sponsor.
“Their involvement brings real industry relevance to the challenge, enriching the learning experience for our students.
This programme is a key part of our mission to inspire young people to think critically and act responsibly towards the environment,” Khoo said in his speech.
Meanwhile, Lee also paid tribute to the commitment of Lam’s Malaysian team.
“As part of LMM’s 5th anniversary celebrations, our employees have pledged 5,000 volunteer hours, a testament to their dedication to giving back. I am confident they will be equally inspired by the creativity of these young changemakers.”
“To all the students, I am excited to see the innovative solutions you will bring to life. This challenge is not just a competition but a chance to shape a better future. We are here not only as sponsors but as mentors, partners, and champions of your ideas,” he said.
