NESTLED within Komtar, Lee Hoe & Co stands as one of the oldest sports stores in the complex, carrying with it decades of Penang’s retail heritage.

Founded as a sundry shop along Penang Road by the late Teoh Seng Huah’s father, the business transformed in the 1970s when Teoh, better known as Ricky, shifted its focus to sports equipment and footwear.

Today, at 75, Ricky continues to helm the Komtar outlet, while his children have expanded the family’s footprint under the Spring brand at Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon, and Queensbay Mall, offering high-end sports labels such as Hoka and New Balance.

“My father started with groceries, but I saw the growing demand for sports gear and decided to change direction,” Ricky recalled. “It was a risk, but it gave us our identity.”

The Komtar store caters to a wide range of customers, stocking both premium items priced between RM300 and RM700, as well as more affordable options around RM100. Despite changing market trends, Ricky continues to rely on loyal regulars who have supported the store for decades.

“Many of my customers have been with me for years. Their support keeps us going, even when sales are not as strong as before,” he said.

Like many long-standing businesses, Lee Hoe & Co faces challenges from shifting consumer habits and rising competition. Foot traffic in Komtar has declined compared to its heyday, while vacant lots and high service charges have reshaped the retail landscape.

“Operating here is not easy anymore. Fewer people are coming in, and service charges are high. But because I own the premises, I only pay for maintenance, which helps me sustain the business,” Ricky explained.

Ricky’s resilience lies in his deep understanding of customer needs and his ability to adapt. While he does not personally engage in online platforms, his children manage modern marketing and expansion strategies.

At 75, Ricky maintains a steady routine, opening the shop around 11am and closing by 6pm, with Sundays reserved for rest.

“I may not be as active in sports now, I only cycle these days, but I still enjoy coming to the shop. It keeps me connected to people and to the community,” he shared with a smile.

Lee Hoe & Co remains a testament to Penang’s entrepreneurial spirit, a store that has weathered decades of change, sustained by loyal customers, family dedication, and the enduring love of sport.
