THE spirit of compassion and collective action was on full display as the Lions Club of Penang Host launched its Legacy Project, Life Renewal: Machines of Hope, by delivering two brand-new haemodialysis machines to the Fo Yi Dialysis Centre on March 1.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen described the initiative as more than a donation ceremony, but a powerful testament to community-driven leadership.

“Today’s gathering is more than a donation ceremony. It stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when compassionate leadership is combined with collective action,” he said.

In just one month, under the leadership of Lions Club president Lion Teoh Shaw Jhee and organising chairperson Lion Danny Ong, RM86,000 was successfully raised to purchase the two machines.

“This is no small accomplishment. It reflects credibility, commitment and the strong trust of the community,” Gooi added.

The machines, donated to the Fo Yi Dialysis Centre, will directly benefit patients from the B40 community in Penang who depend on affordable and accessible healthcare services.

“Emphasising the critical importance of dialysis treatment, Gooi said access to such care is a matter of survival.

“Access to dialysis treatment is not a luxury. It is essential for survival. What the Lions Club has done today is to provide not only medical equipment, but also the gift of life, dignity and hope,” he further said.

Gooi also took the opportunity to personally commend Lion Teoh for his humanitarian leadership and achievements, including being recognised as a Top 10 Outstanding Young Malaysian 2025, a TOPY 2024 recipient, and receiving international recognition from China.

“These achievements are not merely personal honours. They reflect a consistent dedication to humanitarian service and community leadership,” he said.

“What impresses me most is that despite these accolades, he remains firmly grounded in grassroots service, ensuring that meaningful assistance reaches those who need it most.

“This is the spirit we hope to see in our young leaders, not only the pursuit of excellence, but also a deep commitment to service.”

As the state executive councillor overseeing youth, sports and health, Gooi stressed that strengthening healthcare accessibility requires close collaboration between the government and non-governmental organisations.

“The Lions Club has once again demonstrated the vital role that civil society plays in supporting and complementing our healthcare ecosystem,” he said.

On behalf of the Penang government, Gooi expressed appreciation to the Lions Club, donors, partners and volunteers who made the initiative possible.

“Your generosity today will create a meaningful impact for many years to come. Let this project serve as a reminder that when we unite with a shared purpose, we can truly renew lives and build a more caring and compassionate Penang,” he said.
