CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow has reiterated the importance of ensuring that local contractors and suppliers benefit from major development projects in Penang, including the upcoming Penang Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
Chow said business matching sessions between the main contractor and local businesses are crucial to ensure that the economic benefits of large-scale infrastructure projects flow into the local community.

“The LRT project in Penang is owned by MRT Corp, which is responsible for promoting and implementing public transportation in the country. SRS Consortium has been appointed for Package 1 of the project,” Chow said.
He explained that as part of the arrangement, about 40% of materials and subcontracting work are expected to be sourced from local suppliers and contractors.
“That’s why, upon the request of the Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI), a meeting was organised with MRT Corp and SRS Consortium to give information about the business opportunities available for the LRT project in Penang,” he added.

Chow expressed hope that such initiatives will open more doors for local participation.
“Hopefully, something good can happen and our local contractors will be able to assist the main contractor in the Penang LRT project.
“Not only for the LRT, but for all major projects, there should be opportunities for local suppliers, contractors, and businessmen to benefit and be part of Penang’s development,” Chow said in his speech.
Chow, who is also Padang Kota assemblyman, was speaking during the Deepavali Food Basket Giveaway organised by MICCI Penang, where 150 individuals received festive aid in conjunction with the upcoming celebration.
He commended MICCI for its continued commitment to both business and community development.
“I am very happy to be here with all of you today for this special Deepavali Food Basket giveaway.
“As we approach the Festival of Lights, Deepavali reminds us of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and togetherness.
“What we are doing today truly captures the real meaning of Deepavali, sharing kindness and spreading joy, especially to those who may need a little extra support,” he added.
Chow also acknowledged MICCI’s long-standing contribution to Penang’s economic growth and social welfare.
“For more than a century, MICCI has been an important part of Penang’s story, helping businesses grow, supporting entrepreneurs, and strengthening our community.

“Your continued effort to care for society shows that MICCI’s success is not just measured in business, but also in compassion and service,” he said.
In appreciation of MICCI’s efforts, Chow announced a RM60,000 contribution from the Penang government to the chamber.
“On behalf of the state government, I am pleased to announce a RM60,000 contribution to MICCI Penang as a token of our appreciation and encouragement for your continued efforts to uplift the community,” he said.
Also present earlier were Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan and MICCI Penang president Datuk S. Parthiban.
