Outside, frontliners and volunteers from the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) screened body temperatures of visitors before allowing them to enter the market. Social distancing was also observed.

Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong said the authorities would allow about 50 people to be in the market at any one time.

“We have Rela and other frontliners ensuring the market-goers practise social distancing while in the market.

“We have a special lane for senior citizens and frontliners such as nurse, police, and army to buy their groceries.

“We understand that the queue may sometimes be long. We hope that the public can bear with the situation.

“We are doing our best to control the crowd,” Ong told Buletin Mutiara at the market today.

Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer said the Batu Lancang market was among the markets in Penang that received praises by the authorities for good crowd management.

“The market is often visited by frontline workers who are given the priority to enter. The public can also get their supplies easily due to the good crowd control,” he said.
